“children are highly active and successful learners” Ofsted 2016day nurseries

My name is Ruth Mills (until recently Ruth Gandy) and I am the Manager of Puffins in the City. I hold a BA (Hons QTS) degree in Primary Teaching & English Literature & Language. I have previous experience working in various Primary schools as an Advanced Skills Teacher, and also worked as an Assistant Head teacher before leaving the profession to move back to Devon to focus on family. I ran my own business for a few years then decided to return to education after especially enjoying having a toddler son of my own.SONY DSC

I am very pleased to be managing Puffins in the City as part of a strong team who pride ourselves on delivering quality education and care to children. We were tremendously proud to achieve Outstanding across all areas in our recent Ofsted inspection on April 15th 2016.

Our nursery is situated within Keble House at the heart of Southernhay Business area, adjacent to the Crown County Court. The City Centre locationSONY DSC is a stone’s throw from the Princesshay Shopping Centre, the Quay and St Leonards. Our setting caters for families from a wide catchment area and, with its designated drop off/collection parking zone and pushchair store, it is ideal for parents to access on foot, by public transport or by car.

Our open plan ground floor nursery boasts spacious, flexible areas for all children between the ages of 0-5 years to play learn and explore. Each age group has their own individual area and our transparent partitions throughout the building make the transitions between rooms very easy for the children.

SHgardenChildren’s play and learning continues outside in our outdoor play area which is a short walk from the nursery. Our city centre location provides an ideal opportunity for the children to regularly experience a variety of trips and outings helping them to gain an understanding about our local community and the world around us. Popular destinations include: local parks and gardens; Exeter cathedral; the museum; the library; the quayside; local transport stations and many more.

I am supported by a dedicated and enthusiastic team who help me oversee the nursery and to continually drive improvements. This includes Becky Hadley as Deputy Manager and Preschool Room Leader and two other experienced Room Leaders, Frances Peek and Molly Crowley. We are fortunate enough to have a huge breadth of qualifications and experience within the nursery; ranging from our Level 2 apprentices, who follow our in-house training program, to our Early Years Teachers and everything in between.

At Puffins in the City, we are dedicated to working closely with schools to ensure that the transition is smooth and exciting for the children and SG Preschool-001families. We do this by making strong links with schools at an early stage, sharing information and going on visits. We talk to the children about their school and work on ‘school readiness’ skills over a longer period to ensure they have the best start possible.

As a company, Puffins of Exeter Ltd. has a charitable ethos, hosting a range of events each year to raise money for Exeter Foundation – an organisation which supports lots of local charities.

If you are interested in visiting Puffins in the City to see what we are all about please don’t hesitate to contact our Head Office to arrange a show around 01392 496017.

We look forward to meeting you!
