Case Study:
Apprenticeships enable this childcare provider to build a highly qualified workforce and exceed industry
Vital resources
For the past eight years, Puffins of Exeter, a childcare provider catering for over 600 families in and around Exeter, has taken on 30-40 apprentices per year. The company offers Intermediate and Advanced Apprenticeships in Children and Young People’s Workforce, and Advanced and Higher Apprenticeships in Management.
Gillian Fawcett, Director of the company, explains how important the apprentices are in maintaining the company workforce: “Young men and women who work with children sometimes leave to care for their own family so it is vital that we always have a supply of trained and qualified staff who are able to fill the vacancies that inevitably arise.”
Puffins uses the Apprenticeship vacancies website provided for free by the National Apprenticeship Service to find apprentices, taking on school leavers as well as older people.
Education means excellence
Apprenticeships have enabled Puffins to invest in the education of their workforce, with the majority of their staff gaining the Level 2 or 3 CACHE 9Council for Awards in Care, Health and Education) Diploma in Children and Young People’s Workforce, and some going on to gain an NVQ Level 3 in management.
“Apprenticeships have given us structured qualifications that the vast majority of our staff now follow”, says Gillian. “There has been much research to show that the better qualified the staff, the better the outcomes for children. We also firmly believe that the better qualified workforce leads to better inspection  rades.”
Gillian continues: “Our workforce prior to 2000 would have consisted of the necessary levels of qualified staff to meet regulatory requirements. Now, the qualifications of our staff significantly exceed the industry minimum standards”.
Training future managers
The Higher Apprenticeship in Management offered by Puffins is a more recent venture for the company, and came about from a desire to retain talent. These apprentices achieve the VQ Level 5 in Management and a Level 5 EDI (Education Development International) Diploma in Leadership and Management.
This has meant that Puffins can identify ambitious people and give them promotion opportunities. “We prefer to promote internally, and hence encourage and support staff to gain higher qualifications,” Gillian explains. This ensures the continued improvement of the business.
Inspired by their own success, Puffins has been promoting the benefits of Apprenticeships to others within their sector and a fellow member of the National Day Nurseries Association has taken on an apprentice as a result. In recognition of their commitment to Apprenticeships, Puffins of Exeter was crowned South West Medium Employer of the Year at the National Apprenticeships Awards 2012.
